Knitting Goals

My intention is to improve my knitting skills this year. I’ve put it out there and now it must happen!  🙂

For me, setting goals can be tricky! My usual routine is to plan myself into oblivion.  I then spend so much time planning my tracks and tracking my plan that I don’t achieve much toward my goals (but I’ve gotten great at planning!).

This year, I’m going to try something a bit different.  I’ll definitely make plans because… well, because I must.  🙂   However, I will also leave room for spontaneous learning!

General Goals

In the upcoming year, I’d like to improve my double knitting, brioche, entrelac, and cable techniques.  Additionally, I would like to learn how to do sewn, crocheted, and knitted facing steeking techniques.  Finally, I’d like to practice with various knit design software and study basic technical editing techniques so I’m better equipped to write patterns.

So, those are the goals.  Now, on to the plan for how I’ll actually achieve them!

The Basic Plan

What works best for me is to find patterns I love that use knit techniques I don’t yet know how to do.  I then purchase the pattern and the yarn. That way, I’m more likely to follow through.

It sometimes takes more than a year, but I definitely get around to it.

Following through generally follows a few steps and can last several months.

First, I swatch for practice. I use this time to also get a ‘feel’ for how the yarn behaves.

Next, I do a small project piece using the technique. I may or may not use the same yarn, but at least I get to use the skill in a real project.

Finally, I start on the pattern that encouraged me to learn the technique.

Here’s the basic plan so far. I need to find a few more projects, and I may swap out some of the projects currently listed, but it’s a start.

Timelines and such are usually a part of any plan, but I think I’ll hold off on that for now! After all, some of you may want to join me on this little endeavor.

Who knows!  But I’m sure to have fun!
